Florida Democrats delivered a stunning blow to their party’s Washington establishment Tuesday night, handing the Senate nomination to far-left state Rep. Angie Nixon after she pulled off a massive upset over heavily funded candidate Alex Vindman.
The result was particularly embarrassing for national Democrats because of the enormous financial advantage behind Vindman’s campaign. Nixon reportedly raised less than $1 million, while Vindman brought in more than $16 million with the backing of powerful Democratic interests hoping to make Florida competitive in the upcoming midterm election.
Instead, Democratic primary voters chose Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America whose platform includes Medicare for All, universal child care, expanded government spending and opposition to continued U.S. military aid to Israel.
