A dramatic political clash erupted in Washington this week after testimony from outgoing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ignited a firestorm inside the Trump administration.
At the center of the controversy is a staggering $200 million advertising campaign tied to the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration messaging strategy. The dispute intensified when Noem testified before the Senate that the initiative had been approved by President Donald Trump himself.
That claim set off immediate alarm bells among lawmakers and apparently inside the White House as well.
According to reporting from Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana quickly found himself pulled into the middle of the growing controversy. Kennedy had already been raising concerns about the massive government spending tied to the DHS media push before Noem appeared before Congress.
But the situation exploded when Noem suggested under oath that the president had personally authorized the plan.
