President Donald Trump made a sudden and decisive move Saturday, scrapping planned negotiations with Iran just hours before American envoys were set to depart for talks in Pakistan. The unexpected cancellation signals a sharp shift toward a more aggressive posture, as the United States ramps up pressure on Tehran both diplomatically and militarily.
According to reports, U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were preparing for a long-haul trip to Islamabad for what would have been a second round of discussions with Iranian representatives. The meetings were expected to involve figures tied to Iran’s powerful security apparatus, including elements associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
But Trump pulled the plug at the eleventh hour.
Speaking bluntly in an interview with Fox News, the president explained his reasoning in typical fashion. “I’ve told my people a little while ago they were getting ready to leave, and I said, ‘Nope, you’re not making an 18 hour flight to go there. We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want,’” Trump said.
