In a thunderous move that’s already sending shockwaves through global trade circles, President Donald Trump has announced a stunning escalation in his fight to revive American steel. Speaking at a U.S. Steel plant in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, the former—and potentially future—Commander-in-Chief declared a doubling of steel import tariffs from 25% to a jaw-dropping 50%.
This bold policy shift comes on the heels of a newly approved partnership between American steel giant U.S. Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel. The $13 billion acquisition deal had been blocked under the Biden administration, but Trump has now given it the green light, hailing it as a “blockbuster deal” that keeps U.S. Steel “an American company.”
“We are going to be imposing a 25% increase. We’re going to bring it up from 25% to 50%, the tariffs on steel in the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States, nobody is going to get around that,” Trump said, his voice echoing over the roar of steelworkers cheering in support.
The Tariff Tsunami
Trump admitted he originally considered a 40% tariff hike but decided instead to go all-in with the full 50% increase. No explanation was given for the extra push—but if history tells us anything, it’s that Trump doesn’t play small when it comes to American jobs.
