Jacksonville, Florida – A political firestorm is brewing in the Sunshine State after revelations that Democrat Mayor Donna Deegan’s office instructed local sheriffs not to enforce immigration laws, defying both state and local legislation and drawing sharp criticism from conservative leaders.

The bombshell came to light when Jacksonville City Council President Kevin Carrico went public, revealing that the city’s top legal advisor, handpicked by Mayor Deegan, sent directives to law enforcement essentially telling them to ignore Florida’s crackdown on illegal immigration. According to Carrico, “As to General Council Fackler directing JSO not to enforce the State and Local Illegal immigration laws, This directive not only ties the hands of our local law enforcement, but it undermines the will of the Council and State Legislature.”
Carrico didn’t hold back. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he accused the Mayor of embracing “open-border politics” and sabotaging law and order in a state that has become a national leader in the fight against illegal immigration under Governor Ron DeSantis.
In a follow-up interview with Florida’s Voice, Carrico detailed the shocking move: “The Office of General Counsel of the, that was appointed by the Democratic mayor, sent a letter to the sheriff or email to the sheriff today telling him, do not enforce the state illegal immigration law and do not enforce the local illegal immigration law that we’ve been on this show talking about.”
