Reporters traveling with the president observed a large inflatable evacuation slide extending from a door on the front-right portion of the aircraft down toward the tarmac. Notably, the slide was positioned on the opposite side of the plane from the entrance Trump typically uses when boarding.
The scene became even more intriguing when the traditional blue-and-white Air Force One was pulled from a nearby hangar and moved several hundred yards behind the newer aircraft.
That development naturally prompted questions about whether the president might ultimately abandon the newer jet and continue his trip aboard the longstanding presidential aircraft.
Trump eventually left Marine One and addressed reporters about the situation, explaining that crews were inspecting the emergency equipment.
“So they’re checking the slide over here,” Trump said. “They were doing a check on the slide, you know?”
When asked directly whether the incident represented a security concern, Trump rejected the suggestion that there was a serious problem.
“They were checking it before, and they just wanted to make sure,” he said. “They want to make sure everything works perfectly.”
The president was also asked whether he personally had confidence in the aircraft’s safety.
His response was blunt.
“Yeah, I am — or I wouldn’t be on it.”
While the aircraft remained on the ground, the exact circumstances surrounding the slide deployment were not immediately known.
The White House initially described the situation as an inspection of the aircraft’s safety equipment. The Associated Press reported that it was initially unclear whether the slide had been deliberately deployed during testing or had accidentally activated.
A subsequent Reuters report provided more detail, saying military personnel accidentally triggered the slide while working aboard the aircraft.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung did not elaborate on the precise cause but emphasized that the aircraft had been inspected.
“As the President has said, the slide was checked out to make sure everything works perfectly,” Cheung said.
An Air Force spokesperson likewise confirmed that an “emergency slide deployment” had occurred, although the service did not initially clarify whether it was deliberate or accidental.
Officials maintained that the aircraft remained safe and continued on its scheduled mission.
Before Trump boarded, crews deflated the inflatable slide, detached it from the aircraft and removed it from the area.
The president subsequently boarded the Boeing 747, which departed Joint Base Andrews and arrived in Dallas several hours later without any additional reported problems.
Still, the incident is likely to fuel questions surrounding the aircraft, particularly because the jet has an extraordinary backstory.
The Boeing 747-8 was offered to the United States by Qatar’s royal family and was formally accepted by the Defense Department in May 2025 for potential presidential use.
The aircraft was reportedly valued at approximately $400 million before the modifications necessary to transform it into a presidential transport.
The decision to accept the aircraft generated immediate controversy.
Critics questioned why the United States would accept such a costly aircraft from a foreign government and raised concerns about both the expense and security implications of converting a commercial VIP jet for presidential transportation.
The Trump administration, however, defended the decision as lawful and financially beneficial to the federal government.
The administration also pointed to Boeing’s continuing difficulties with the production and delivery of two new VC-25B aircraft that had been ordered to replace the aging presidential fleet.
Turning an aircraft into a presidential command center is far more complicated than simply installing luxury accommodations.
The presidential fleet requires highly specialized technology and defensive capabilities designed for the unique demands of carrying the commander in chief.
According to the Defense Department, the permanent VC-25B replacement aircraft are being outfitted with secure communications, military avionics, self-defense capabilities, upgraded electrical systems and other specialized equipment.
Those systems are intended to ensure that the president can continue performing the duties of the office while traveling.
The Qatari-donated aircraft underwent an accelerated refurbishment before Trump began using it on July 1.
Wednesday’s evacuation-slide incident did not prevent the president from completing his trip, but it nevertheless provided another highly visible reminder of the extraordinary scrutiny surrounding the aircraft.
For Trump, the episode ended with a straightforward decision: after the equipment was checked, he boarded the plane himself.
And his message to reporters was unmistakable — if he did not believe the aircraft was safe, he said he would not have stepped aboard.
