Tom Cruise has spent decades building a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most dependable box-office draws. But his latest project, Digger, is facing a difficult opening weekend, with early ticket sales falling well below what would typically be expected from a major studio production starring one of the industry’s biggest names.
The Warner Bros. release brought in approximately $3.4 million on Friday, a figure that includes Thursday-night preview screenings. The movie opened in more than 3,300 theaters throughout North America, putting the early results under considerable scrutiny as Hollywood watches to see whether the film can gain momentum over the remainder of its debut weekend.
Early projections have suggested that Digger could ultimately collect roughly $10 million domestically during its first weekend.
That number takes on greater significance when compared with the movie’s enormous production cost.
