Tim Walz’s Military Past Under Fire: ‘He Abandoned Us!’

The announcement of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential pick has sparked a wave of controversy. Walz, a former Army National Guard member with 24 years of service and a rank of command sergeant major, is now facing allegations from former military colleagues. The allegations claim that Walz avoided deployment to Iraq in 2005, leading to accusations of “stolen valor.”

While some liberal media outlets, like Newsweek, praise Walz as “the longest-serving military veteran to be a vice presidential nominee,” others are raising serious questions about his military service record. Retired Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling lauded Walz’s rank, stating, “They uphold standards. They speak their minds to all ranks (private to generals). They’re not afraid of getting bad news because they know how to fix things when they go wrong.” However, not everyone shares Hertling’s view. Some of Walz’s former colleagues have come forward with damning accusations about his conduct during his military career.

The controversy centers around allegations from retired Command Sgt. Maj. Doug Julin, who accused Walz of abandoning his unit when they were set to deploy to Iraq in 2005. In a 2022 interview with Alpha News, Julin claimed that Walz made a “backdoor deal” to skip the deployment. According to Julin, Walz initially stated his intention to deploy but later backed out without notifying his superior officers. “Then out of nowhere in June of 2005, Tom Behrends is there as the new CSM,” Julin recalled.
