The battle over congressional maps is exploding across the country as Republicans gain momentum in one of the most high-stakes political fights ahead of the 2026 midterms. With multiple states redrawing district lines and courts weighing in on controversial maps, the fight over who controls Congress is intensifying — and Democrats are increasingly finding themselves on defense.
At the center of the latest showdown is Alabama, where state officials are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to step in and allow Republicans to use a congressional map approved in 2023 rather than one imposed by a lower court.
The dispute centers on whether Alabama should be forced to adopt a map containing two majority-Black congressional districts instead of one. State officials argue the court-ordered plan improperly prioritizes race and violates constitutional principles.
Alabama Solicitor General A. Barrett Bowdre blasted the lower court’s ruling in a filing to the Supreme Court, warning that the state could otherwise be forced into conducting elections under a flawed system.
