This Guy Just MADE THE ATF Look Stupid

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has long been infamous for bizarre interpretations of federal gun laws. But one man recently exposed just how far the agency’s absurdity can go.

Gun rights activist Zach Clark successfully registered a potato as a federally approved firearm silencer under the National Firearms Act (NFA), highlighting what he calls the “dumb” nature of the rules.

The ATF issued an official approval for Clark’s potato silencer design, complete with serial number “TATE001.” Clark’s creation is deceptively simple: a metal washer attached to a russet potato with epoxy.

Clark, who works as a social media manager for the National Association for Gun Rights, submitted the paperwork on New Year’s Day 2026—immediately after President Trump’s historic NFA tax cut went into effect. The legislation eliminated the $200 tax stamp for suppressors, dropping the cost to zero overnight.
