New York’s Board of Regents ignited a firestorm by trying to force Massapequa High School to abandon its Chiefs mascot—labeling it “offensive” to Native Americans. But while Native American symbols were deemed unacceptable, mascots tied to European history—like the “Dutchmen” or “Huguenots”—remained untouched.
That’s when the Trump administration stepped in.
Linda McMahon didn’t just condemn the move—she launched a federal enforcement action. The Department of Education is now referring the case to the Department of Justice after New York officials refused to back down.
