Authorities are labeling the incidents as “targeted,” adding a dark layer of calculation to what’s already a gruesome story. The suspect, described as a white male with brown hair and body armor, reportedly impersonated law enforcement — showing up with flashing lights and a police uniform-style outfit.
“I’ve activated the State Emergency Operations Center…”
Governor Walz responded swiftly, activating the State Emergency Operations Center to support local law enforcement. “Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them,” Walz said in a statement. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will share more information soon.”
Initially, police believed there were two suspects, with one taken into custody after a shootout in Brooklyn Park. However, officials later clarified that only one suspect remains at large and earlier reports of a second gunman were incorrect.
Gunned Down in Their Own Homes
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s Drew Evans provided chilling details about the sequence of events. Law enforcement was first called around 2 a.m. to respond to a shooting at Senator Hoffman’s residence. Officers discovered the Senator and his wife with gunshot wounds and rushed to render emergency aid before transporting them to the hospital.
Barely an hour later, at approximately 3:35 a.m., police performed a welfare check at Representative Hortman’s home. When they arrived, they noticed a vehicle with police lights already parked in the driveway — and what appeared to be a uniformed officer standing at the door. But as they approached, the man opened fire.
Evans stated, “That individual immediately fired a weapon at them,” prompting a brief exchange of gunfire. The suspect managed to flee the scene.
Chilling Reports Confirm Lawmaker Deaths
Initial confusion surrounded the victims’ names, with early reports misidentifying Hortman as “Melissa Hoffman.” That has since been corrected.
Local journalist John Hauser was among the first to break the story: “BREAKING: Multiple sources tell 5 Eyewitness News at least two MN state lawmakers were shot at their homes last night by a gunman impersonating a police officer. DFL Speaker Emerita Melissa Hoffman in Brooklyn Park and DFL Sen. John Hoffman in Champlin.”
The gunman remains on the loose as of the latest updates, and a statewide manhunt is underway.
Rising Concerns Over Political Violence
While details are still unfolding, this brazen act of violence against elected Democrats is already sparking serious concern. If confirmed that the attacker specifically targeted these public officials while dressed as law enforcement, the implications for national security and political discourse are staggering.
The communities of Brooklyn Park and Champlin remain on high alert, with law enforcement urging residents to shelter in place as the investigation intensifies.
More updates will follow as this devastating story develops.
