In a landmark decision that could ripple across the nation, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in favor of South Carolina’s effort to cut off Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid funds. The ruling is a major victory for conservatives who have fought for years to defund the abortion giant and is likely to reshape how states assert their authority over federal healthcare funding.
The high court’s conservative majority held firm, declaring that individuals on Medicaid do not have the legal standing to sue the government over their choice of medical provider. In effect, this means states can determine which providers qualify for Medicaid reimbursement—without being second-guessed in court by patients.
Justice Neil Gorsuch, writing for the majority, was blunt:
“Congress knows how to give a grantee clear and unambiguous notice that, if it accepts federal funds, it may face private suits asserting an individual right to choose a medical provider,” he said.
“That is not the law we have.”
This decision effectively locks Planned Parenthood out of using Medicaid patient lawsuits as a backdoor to regain funding in red states. It also reinforces state sovereignty over health care decisions, particularly when it comes to taxpayer dollars flowing to controversial organizations.
