In a dramatic shift, NASA has decided that a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule will be tasked with returning two stranded astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS), a mission initially slated for Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. The decision, driven by persistent issues plaguing Boeing’s spacecraft, has added further strain to the aerospace giant’s already troubled space program.
After spending nearly 80 days aboard the ISS, the two astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, are now expected to return to Earth in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. This marks yet another victory for Elon Musk’s SpaceX, while Boeing continues to grapple with significant setbacks. The decision was reached after a formal review by NASA, where the agency concluded that the Crew Dragon was the safer option to bring the astronauts home.
