Sen. Coons Hurt in Delaware Car Crash

“Earlier today, a Delaware driver experienced a medical incident and collided with several cars, including one in which I was a passenger,” Coons wrote in a post on X.

Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell confirmed that Coons was seated in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders transported the senator to Beebe Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Fortunately, his injuries were reported to be minor.

“I was transported to Beebe Hospital and treated for minor injuries,” Coons continued. “I’m now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery.”

Local outlet CoastTV reported that six individuals, including Coons, were taken to area hospitals after the accident. Officials indicated that everyone involved suffered only minor injuries.

Police said the collision began when a pickup truck struck several vehicles after its driver apparently lost consciousness because of a medical issue.

Spell explained that the vehicle carrying the senator, along with multiple other cars, was “struck by a pickup truck whose driver had a suspected medical issue causing him to lose consciousness.”

Investigators have not found evidence suggesting alcohol or drugs contributed to the incident.

“There are no indications of impairment of the truck driver,” the police chief added.

Later Sunday, Coons returned to X to express appreciation for the emergency personnel and medical professionals who responded following the crash.

“I’m deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where I received excellent care,” he wrote.

The senator also reflected on the outcome, noting that the accident could have been much worse.

“I’m feeling relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash,” Coons added.

Among those wishing the senator well was Delaware Representative Sarah McBride, who posted a supportive message after learning of the incident.

“I am so glad to hear you are okay and that no one was seriously injured,” McBride wrote on X. “Sending you and Annie all my love as you recover.”

Coons has represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate since first winning election in 2010. Before serving in the Senate, he spent roughly a decade in county government, building a career in public service before succeeding to statewide office.

As investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s collision, authorities have indicated that the evidence points to a medical emergency—not impairment—as the cause of the crash. With no life-threatening injuries reported, officials say all those involved are expected to recover.
