Ibarra entered the United States illegally in September 2022 through El Paso, Texas, and was allowed to stay under the administration’s lenient border policies. He eventually made his way to New York City, where he was arrested on multiple charges, including reckless endangerment of a child. However, thanks to New York’s sanctuary city laws, Ibarra was released back onto the streets.
The Biden administration then funded Ibarra’s flight to Georgia, where he continued his criminal activities. After being arrested for shoplifting in Athens, Georgia, Ibarra was again released — only to later murder Riley in a senseless act of violence.
In response to Riley’s tragic death, lawmakers introduced the Laken Riley Act to Congress. The proposed legislation seeks to close dangerous loopholes in the immigration system. Key provisions include requiring local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal immigrants arrested for crimes such as shoplifting or theft.
Additionally, the bill empowers state attorneys general to file lawsuits against federal officials who fail to enforce immigration laws or violate provisions of the act.
While the Laken Riley Act passed the House with strong bipartisan support, its journey through the Senate could face hurdles. Some Senate Democrats are reportedly looking to weaken the bill by attaching amendments that would grant partial amnesty to illegal immigrants — a move critics say undermines the legislation’s intent.
Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH), a legal immigrant from Colombia, did not hold back during a recent appearance on Newsmax’s Wake Up America. He sharply criticized Democrats who oppose the bill.
“As a legal immigrant to this country, it’s abhorrent that we have Democrats that would even think about voting against this bill,” Moreno said. “Look, if we can’t agree that criminals, people who committed crimes in this country, have to be deported, then we can’t have any reasonable conversations with Democrats.”

Moreno expressed optimism that Democrats’ desire to remain politically viable would lead to the bill’s passage.
“So I suspect — I’ve met a few freshman Democrats in our orientation, I think there’s some good ones there — I think we’re going to get much more than 60 votes,” Moreno continued. “At the end of the day, the Democrats realize that if they continue to be completely unreasonable, completely radical, they will never win another election again. And that’s what they care more about than anything else.”
He also predicted that former President Donald Trump could make the bill one of his first legislative victories if re-elected.
“We get it teed up so the second President Trump is done being sworn in, being inaugurated — a historic day, by the way, the greatest comeback in American history — he will get to work, get that signed, get executive orders in,” Moreno stated.
The Laken Riley Act has the potential to become a cornerstone in the fight for stronger immigration enforcement. For voters frustrated by unchecked illegal immigration, the bill represents a step toward accountability and justice. As the Senate gears up for debate, the pressure is on Democrats to decide whether they’ll stand with the American people — or continue prioritizing politics over safety.
Donald Trump, should he take office again, has a chance to start his presidency with a clear win, setting the tone for a renewed focus on law and order.
