Schumer Breaks Ranks: “I’m With Trump on This!”

“And no other police department in America run by Americans has — has done what ICE has done. So yes, we want to protect Americans. He’s not doing it. And that’s why the American people are against what ICE is doing. So it was legitimate and right not to stand,” he added.

Those statements immediately raised eyebrows across Washington. Officials within the Trump administration were quick to push back, noting that ICE operations are conducted in strict accordance with federal law and Department of Homeland Security guidelines. Contrary to Schumer’s claims, immigration enforcement efforts have overwhelmingly targeted illegal aliens with documented criminal histories — including offenses involving child exploitation, violent assault, drug trafficking, and homicide.

Despite this, Democrats have increasingly chosen rhetoric that appears more sympathetic to individuals in the country illegally than to the federal agents tasked with enforcing immigration law. Critics argue the refusal to stand during the State of the Union symbolized that disconnect — a message that resonated deeply with many voters concerned about border security and public safety.

While immigration dominated headlines, Schumer also pivoted to foreign policy concerns ahead of the president’s address, urging the administration to clarify its strategy regarding rising tensions with Iran. His remarks followed a classified briefing earlier in the day attended by senior congressional leaders, where Cabinet officials provided updates on the evolving situation in the Middle East.

Speaking afterward, Schumer emphasized the seriousness of the moment and demanded public transparency.

“It’s very serious and the president has an obligation to make his goals public,” Schumer told Jewish Insider after the briefing.

Other Democrats echoed similar concerns. Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the administration should clearly outline U.S. objectives and interests in the region, arguing that lawmakers deserve a full understanding of the stakes involved.

House Intelligence Committee ranking member Jim Himes expressed even deeper unease, warning of the risks associated with renewed military engagement in the Middle East.

“I was very concerned,” Himes said, cautioning that “wars in the Middle East don’t go well for presidents, for the country, and we have not heard articulated a single good reason for why now is the moment to launch yet another war in the Middle East.”

Republicans, meanwhile, struck a notably different tone. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized that the administration is carefully weighing its options and approaching the situation deliberately.

“The administration is giving a lot of thought to the situation. And I appreciate where they’re coming from,” Thune said.

At the White House, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed that President Trump remains firmly in control of any potential action involving Iran. Speaking with reporters, Leavitt stressed that speculation surrounding military decisions was premature and often misleading.

During a Tuesday appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends, Leavitt also addressed questions surrounding recent U.S. airstrikes, stating that June operations had crippled Iran’s nuclear capabilities — even as Special Envoy Steve Witkoff warned Tehran may still be dangerously close to producing weapons-grade material.

Leavitt explained that the administration remains vigilant despite past successes.

According to Leavitt, the success of Operation Midnight Hammer “does not mean that Iran may never try again to establish a nuclear program that could directly threaten the United States and our allies abroad, and that’s what the president wants to ensure can never happen again.”

She also took aim at media outlets she accused of promoting unfounded speculation about the president’s intentions.

“The president is always the final decision-maker around here,” she said. “And I’ve seen a lot of sensationalist reporting over the past day that is just completely untrue, and anyone speculating to the media, hiding behind an anonymous source, pretending to know what President Trump is thinking or a decision he will make with respect to action against Iran has no idea what they’re talking about.”

As Democrats continue to resist Trump-era policies both symbolically and substantively, Republicans argue the contrast could not be clearer — particularly on issues of border enforcement, national security, and standing with those tasked with protecting the American people.
