The writing is on the wall, and even Schiff couldn’t ignore it any longer.
Schiff Breaks Rank on Bill Maher’s Show
Appearing on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Schiff did something rare for a Democrat: he admitted they’ve lost touch on law and order.
“So we’re gonna have to change how we do business in California,” Schiff told Maher. “We’re gonna have to address people’s legitimate concerns about crime.”
This isn’t just talk. Schiff recounted his own personal brush with out-of-control crime – and it hit closer to home than most would expect.
A Luggage Theft That Opened His Eyes
Schiff described how, during a visit to San Francisco two years ago, criminals broke into his car and stole his luggage. What should’ve been a simple trip to replace toiletries turned into a surreal look at the consequences of soft-on-crime policies.
“And what was most memorable about the experience for me is I went to this Target in South San Francisco, 10 o’clock at night, and I’m getting the toiletries I’m gonna need for my next two days in the city,” Schiff explained. “First of all, I had to get the clerk, which is hard to find, to unlock the shampoo or the whatever. So that’s one thing.”
The scene Schiff described has become all too common in Democrat-run cities where store shelves are locked behind glass and criminals roam with impunity.
Even Schiff Couldn’t Believe What He Heard
After explaining his situation to the clerk, Schiff said the cashier’s blunt response hit him like a brick.
“And she asked me what happened, and I told her, and she basically said in not so many words, ’Yeah, Democrats are ********.’ And I thought, you know, if the cashier in South San Francisco at 10 o’clock at night believes that Democrats are a—h—s because the shampoo was locked up and my stuff got stolen out of the trunk, we’ve got a major problem that we have to address,” Schiff admitted.
Let that sink in – a lifelong Democrat being told by a working-class Californian that his party has turned into the problem.
Bill Maher Weighs In
Maher, who has become increasingly critical of the far-left drift in his own party, didn’t hold back in his reaction.
“That’s an awesome story,” Maher said. “That says a lot. I hope all the Democrats listen to that story.”

A Sign of the Times
This wasn’t just a story about a stolen suitcase. It was a rare moment of clarity for a Democrat who built his career defending the establishment narrative. Now, even Schiff sees the ground shifting beneath his feet.
His comments come amid a broader backlash against progressive district attorneys backed by figures like George Soros, who have prioritized leniency and decriminalization – often at the expense of public safety.
With even liberal cities like San Francisco recalling radical prosecutors and voters rejecting “Defund the Police” policies, Schiff’s warning may be too little, too late.
But make no mistake – if even Adam Schiff is willing to admit the Democrats have a crime crisis, it’s a clear signal the party is in deep trouble.
Will they listen? Or will more voters echo the South San Francisco cashier’s raw verdict in 2026?
