SAVE Act Gains Senate Majority After Collins Decision

Her decision gives GOP leadership renewed momentum as they push for nationwide voter ID standards and proof of citizenship requirements for federal elections. With Vice President JD Vance prepared to cast a tie-breaking vote if needed, Republicans believe they are within striking distance of securing passage under a revived “talking filibuster” framework.

Collins Tips the Scales

Collins had previously voiced concerns about earlier versions of the legislation, particularly language that would have required voters to show passports or birth certificates at the polls each time they voted. That requirement, she argued, would have imposed unnecessary hurdles on eligible voters.
