The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to revive former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore’s $8.2 million defamation judgment, bringing another chapter of his long-running legal battle to a close.
The justices on Monday refused to hear Moore’s challenge to a federal appeals court decision that wiped out the massive jury award. The Court rejected the appeal without issuing an explanation, leaving the ruling from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in place.
The decision represents a significant win for Senate Majority PAC, a Democratic-aligned political organization that financed the advertisement at the center of Moore’s lawsuit.
The case grew out of Alabama’s fiercely contested 2017 special Senate election, a race that attracted national attention and ultimately produced one of the biggest political upsets in the state’s modern history.
