College used to be a place to sharpen your mind through reading, writing, and critical thinking. Now, it’s increasingly about mastering artificial intelligence — whether students are ready or not.
Purdue University just ignited a firestorm with a controversial new policy. The university will now require all undergraduates to demonstrate “AI working competency” before they can graduate.
The Board of Trustees approved the mandate on December 12, and it will impact every incoming freshman starting in Fall 2026 at both the West Lafayette and Indianapolis campuses. Students will have to show they can use AI tools effectively, understand their limits, and adapt as these systems evolve.
“The reach and pace of AI’s impact to society, including many dimensions of higher education, means that we at Purdue must lean in and lean forward and do so across different functions at the university,” said Purdue President Mung Chiang.¹
