Oregon’s National Guard leadership is facing a firestorm after what many are calling an open act of defiance against the Commander-in-Chief. Brigadier General Alan R. Gronewold, head of the Oregon National Guard, publicly stated that his troops would be used to “protect protesters” targeting federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities — directly contradicting President Donald Trump’s orders to restore law and order.

The explosive comments, made before Oregon’s Senate Veterans and Emergency Preparedness Subcommittee last week, have resurfaced online just as a federal appeals court considers whether Trump can deploy the Guard to Portland under Title 10 orders to curb ongoing anti-ICE unrest.
A Shocking Statement Before Lawmakers
General Gronewold’s remarks appeared to outline a vision for the Guard that clashes with the mission defined by federal command. Speaking before the subcommittee, he said:
“I don’t want to speculate on what level of training they will receive or what they will be authorized to perform as far as rules for the use of force. The Title X headquarters will provide that training to them.”
