The Biden administration has allowed chaos to fester in the election system, turning a blind eye as states like Oregon shirk basic responsibilities to maintain clean and accurate voter rolls. But President Trump’s Justice Department is stepping in to stop the madness — and Oregon is ground zero.
On June 6, the Department of Justice, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, filed a forceful Statement of Interest in the ongoing federal lawsuit Judicial Watch v. Reed. The case shines a spotlight on Oregon’s troubling refusal to follow federal law when it comes to cleaning up its voter rolls — a fundamental duty required under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA).
Back in October 2024, conservative watchdog Judicial Watch sued the state of Oregon for failing to maintain accurate voter registration records. At the heart of the lawsuit is the accusation that Oregon has allowed ineligible voters to remain on the rolls — and even worse, has hidden the process from public view.
When Judicial Watch requested documentation from Oregon regarding its efforts to confirm voter eligibility, the state came back with an astonishing excuse. According to the DOJ filing, a support analyst in the Oregon Secretary of State’s office, Greg Bergerson, claimed via email it would take “approximately 5,000 hours” to gather the information because of inconsistent practices between counties and the need to contact local officials — some of whom have even retired.
