In a headline-making announcement Wednesday, former President Donald Trump revealed a major trade breakthrough with China—America’s largest geopolitical adversary. The deal, which could secure critical resources for the U.S., is already sparking backlash from conservatives, even some within Trump’s own base.
Trump took to Truth Social with a bold declaration: the United States has finalized an agreement—pending final sign-off—with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The most notable gain? A commitment from China to deliver vital magnets and rare earth materials directly to the U.S.
“Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me,” Trump wrote in all caps. “Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China.”
For those unfamiliar, rare earth elements are essential for manufacturing everything from smartphones and electric vehicles to military hardware. China dominates this market, producing 60% of the global supply and processing nearly 90% of it. Without access to these materials, the United States could face devastating setbacks in both technology and national defense.
