A Norwegian Olympic medalist just discovered that global fame and a bronze medal cannot repair a broken relationship. What was supposed to be a triumphant celebration in Italy quickly spiraled into one of the most awkward post-race interviews in recent Winter Games memory.

Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid captured bronze in the men’s 20-kilometer biathlon at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. At 28 years old, he should have been soaking in the moment. He already had relay gold from the 2022 Beijing Games and is a six-time Biathlon World Champion.
Instead of focusing on his athletic achievement, Laegreid stunned viewers during his interview with Norwegian broadcaster NRK. Through tears, he confessed to cheating on his girlfriend just three months earlier.
“Six months ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful, sweetest person,” Laegreid said.
“And three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her.”
The admission blindsided viewers who expected talk of splits, shooting accuracy, and race strategy. Laegreid revealed he had confessed to his girlfriend only a week before the Olympics.
