While investigators initially withheld the victim’s identity, subsequent reporting identified the injured woman as Mia Bieniemy, the wife of the longtime NFL coach. Officials have not publicly disclosed additional details regarding what led to the shooting as the investigation continues.
The case took another shocking turn when the Bieniemys’ son, Elijah, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the incident. According to USA TODAY reporter Arye Pulli, Elijah Bieniemy now faces three felony charges stemming from the shooting.
Court records indicate he has been charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and discharging a firearm within a building.
As of Monday, law enforcement officials had not released additional information regarding a possible motive or whether any prior domestic disturbances occurred before the shooting. Investigators also have not announced whether additional charges could be filed as the case moves through the judicial process.
The incident unfolded while Eric Bieniemy was fulfilling his coaching responsibilities hundreds of miles away in Missouri. Earlier that same day, the Chiefs conducted their second training camp practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph as preparations continue for the upcoming NFL season.
The veteran coach was reportedly with the team during those activities before learning of the emergency involving his family back in Virginia.
The Kansas City Chiefs acknowledged the situation in a brief public statement but declined to elaborate while the matter remains under investigation.
“We are aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,”
The organization did not release further information, citing the sensitive nature of the case.
The heartbreaking development comes during what was expected to be a fresh chapter in Bieniemy’s coaching career. Earlier this year, he returned to Kansas City to once again serve as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator after previously holding the position from 2018 through 2022.
During his earlier tenure with the Chiefs, Bieniemy helped oversee one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses alongside head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The team captured multiple AFC championships and established itself as one of professional football’s dominant franchises.
After leaving Kansas City following the 2022 season, Bieniemy spent time coaching elsewhere before ultimately returning to the Chiefs organization this year. His reunion with the franchise had generated considerable attention as Kansas City prepared for another Super Bowl pursuit.
