The Democratic Party’s ideological direction is once again under the spotlight after a new presidential preference poll placed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) at the top of the field among likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire.
The survey has reignited debate over whether the party’s progressive wing is no longer a vocal faction but instead the driving force behind its future. For conservatives, the numbers are another sign that the policies once viewed as politically untouchable are steadily moving into the Democratic mainstream.
According to the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, Ocasio-Cortez received support from 22 percent of likely Democratic primary voters in the state, narrowly edging out former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who earned 21 percent. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, despite previously serving as the party’s presidential nominee, registered just 5 percent support.
