As speculation quietly builds around a possible 2028 presidential bid, California Governor Gavin Newsom is once again finding himself haunted by a scandal many voters have not forgotten and many critics believe was never fully resolved.
The controversy dates back nearly two decades, to 2007, when Newsom was serving as mayor of San Francisco. At the time, he publicly admitted to having an affair with Ruby Rippey Gibney, the wife of his close friend and top political ally, Alex Tourk. Tourk was not only a personal confidant but also Newsom’s campaign manager and later his chief of staff.
The revelation sent shockwaves through San Francisco’s political class. Newsom’s rapid rise appeared suddenly in jeopardy as questions mounted about his judgment, loyalty, and character.
Facing intense scrutiny, Newsom went on television to address the scandal directly.
“I want to make it clear that everything you’ve heard and read is true,” he said. “I am deeply sorry about that. I’ve hurt someone I care deeply about, Alex Tourk, and his friends and family. That is something I have to live with.”
The apology did not stop there. Newsom also attempted to frame the affair as a betrayal of public trust.
