As devastating wildfires sweep through Los Angeles County, a resurfaced clip of Donald Trump discussing California’s fire management policies on the Joe Rogan Experience has ignited a fresh debate. The video, recorded three months ago, showcases the former president’s blunt criticisms of California’s environmental policies, which he argued are at the root of the state’s wildfire crisis. With flames engulfing thousands of acres and containment still at zero percent, Trump’s remarks have taken on renewed relevance.
Trump Blames Forest Mismanagement and Water Policies
During the podcast, Trump pulled no punches in addressing California’s forest and water management practices. He claimed that the state’s refusal to build sufficient water reservoirs and properly manage its forests was exacerbating wildfire risks.
“They said, ‘We have no water,’” Trump stated. “I said, do you have a drought? ‘No, we don’t have a drought.’ I said, why do you have no water? ‘Because the water isn’t allowed to flow down.’” He went on to criticize the diversion of millions of gallons of water to protect the delta smelt, a small fish native to the region.

This decades-old regulation, according to Trump, has prioritized environmental concerns over human safety. “I could have water for all of that land, water for your forests,” he argued. “You know your forests are dry as a bone.” He also suggested that basic forest maintenance, such as clearing deadfall and raking leaves, could significantly reduce the risk of catastrophic fires while saving billions in damages.
