New Claims Just Surfaced Against Ilhan Omar

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

At the center of the state-level push is Rep. Kristin Robbins, chair of the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee. Robbins previously extended an invitation for Omar to testify before the committee and later requested documents tied to communications between Omar’s office and individuals associated with Feeding Our Future as well as Safari Restaurant, a Minneapolis business reportedly connected to the broader investigation. Omar declined to appear.

Republican lawmakers also attempted to advance a subpoena targeting Omar, but the effort ultimately failed after Democrats voted against the measure. Robbins has since suggested that congressional involvement may be necessary to continue obtaining documents and testimony related to the probe.

Beyond the subpoena dispute, critics have also pointed to Omar’s role in sponsoring the MEALS Act in 2020, a pandemic-era federal measure that expanded waiver authority for USDA nutrition programs. Opponents argue that the expanded flexibility reduced oversight safeguards and contributed to vulnerabilities later exploited by fraudsters.

The broader investigation centers on Feeding Our Future, a now-defunct nonprofit accused by federal authorities of orchestrating a large-scale fraud operation involving falsified meal claims submitted through federally funded child nutrition programs. Prosecutors allege that participants billed the government for meals that were never actually provided to children during the pandemic.

In a major development tied to the case, Feeding Our Future founder Aimee Bock was convicted in 2025 on multiple fraud-related charges connected to the alleged scheme. In a recent jailhouse interview, Bock claimed that Omar was aware of aspects of the operation, asserting that several meal site operators were part of the same Somali community and had allegedly reached out to Omar’s office seeking help with program waivers. Omar’s office has firmly denied any wrongdoing or improper involvement.

As the investigation continues to expand, Minnesota lawmakers have also turned attention to broader systemic issues. An 84-page report released this month by the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee criticized Gov. Tim Walz and his administration, alleging they fostered what the report described as a “culture of tolerance” toward fraud and widespread oversight failures across multiple state-run programs.

The report’s findings, combined with ongoing criminal proceedings and legislative investigations, have kept the Feeding Our Future scandal in the spotlight as officials at both the state and federal level continue to examine how such a large-scale alleged fraud scheme was able to persist for years without detection.

For now, Omar’s continued silence in response to direct questioning is likely to keep political pressure high as Republicans push for further investigations and Democrats resist additional subpoena efforts. The case remains one of the most closely watched fraud probes to emerge from the COVID-19 relief era, with implications that continue to reverberate through Minnesota politics and beyond.
