“Well, it makes my ears red,” Mullin said. “It takes a lot to get me upset.”
Then he turned directly toward Schumer with a blistering response.
“But Chuck Schumer, no one respects you,” he added. “The definition of a lying scumbag politician — that is you. You would be the definition, if you Googled you right now.”
The comments instantly drew attention online, with many conservatives praising Mullin for confronting what they see as repeated attacks on immigration officers by Democratic leaders.
Mullin went on to argue that Schumer’s real problem is not with the agencies themselves, but with the fact that they are enforcing laws Democrats oppose.
“I mean, why don’t you just come out and be honest with the American people?” Mullin said.
“He wants to have open borders.”
That accusation has become a frequent flashpoint in Washington as the border crisis continues to dominate national debate. Republicans have repeatedly argued that Democratic leadership spent years weakening enforcement and encouraging unlawful crossings, while Democrats claim they support reform and humane treatment.
Mullin continued by pointing to the previous administration, saying Schumer had ample opportunity to change enforcement priorities if he truly wanted to do so.
“If you want to defund the Customs and Border Protection Agency, if you want to defund ICE,” Mullin said. “You had time to change those during the Biden administration.”
“You didn’t, because you’re for open borders, and you’re for the criminals running amok in our cities,” he added.
The Homeland Security secretary also accused Schumer of hypocrisy, saying the senator enjoys personal protection while criticizing officers who defend ordinary Americans.
“And for you to say that is so disrespectful to the law enforcement that is out there protecting you,” Mullin said. “Because he has a detail with him. How about he walks around these city streets without a detail? I wonder how safe he would feel.”
The exchange didn’t end there. According to Politico reporter Burgess Everett, Schumer also referred to immigration enforcement agencies Thursday as “a rogue police force,” further intensifying the growing feud.
That language is certain to inflame an already bitter debate over immigration policy, border security, and crime in major cities. Republicans have increasingly rallied behind ICE and Border Patrol agents, portraying them as frontline defenders facing impossible odds under hostile political leadership.
Mullin, who served alongside Schumer in the Senate for three years before taking over at the Department of Homeland Security last month, appears to have little patience for the Democrat’s rhetoric.
With border security set to remain a central issue heading into the next election cycle, Thursday’s clash may be only the beginning of a much larger political war.
