A documented MS-13 gang member with a troubling criminal record is now openly posting celebratory videos on TikTok from inside the United States after being released from immigration detention—while federal officials tasked with protecting the public have been effectively silenced by a court order.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national previously convicted for gang-related activity, is once again drawing attention—not from law enforcement, but from social media followers. His online presence comes after a federal judge ordered his release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, a move that has sparked outrage among immigration officials and critics who say public safety has been sidelined.
At the same time Garcia enjoys the spotlight, leaders at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are constrained by a sweeping gag order issued by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, an Obama-appointed judge. The order restricts senior DHS officials from speaking publicly about the case, even as Garcia himself continues to make public appearances and post viral content.
Garcia has been known to law enforcement for years due to his ties to MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha—a violent transnational gang that originated in Los Angeles during the 1980s and later spread throughout Central America and the United States. MS-13 has earned a reputation for extreme brutality, with members linked to murders, extortion rings, drug trafficking, and large-scale human smuggling operations.
