Two Mississippi towns were rocked by gunfire Friday night as separate high school homecoming celebrations turned into scenes of terror, leaving at least six people dead and 13 others injured. The shootings, which happened just hours apart in Leland and Heidelberg, have left small-town communities reeling — and the gunmen still at large.
These violent outbursts came on the heels of President Trump’s recent decision to deploy federal authorities and National Guard troops to nearby Memphis, Tennessee, to combat surging violent crime across the region.
Chaos in Leland: Four Dead, 12 Wounded
The first attack erupted around midnight in Leland, Mississippi, during the town’s annual homecoming festivities. Crowds had gathered on Main Street after watching Leland High School face Charleston High in a Friday night football game.
According to Mayor John Lee, the city’s celebration turned into a nightmare when gunfire broke out amid the crowd. “The violence erupted at around midnight on the city of Leland’s main street,” Lee told CBS. He later took to Facebook, writing, “I’m deeply saddened about the tragedy,” and announcing that a planned block party was canceled out of respect for the victims.
