Evening commuters on eastbound Highway 50 in Sacramento expected the usual gridlock Monday night. What they didn’t expect was a fiery helicopter crash — and a miracle that unfolded before their eyes.
Helicopter Goes Down in the Middle of Rush Hour
At around 7 p.m., a REACH Air Medical helicopter suffered what officials later called an “in-air emergency” while returning to base after transporting a patient.
Witnesses say the aircraft suddenly dropped from the sky toward the crowded freeway.
“People reported that they basically saw the helicopter kind of going down quickly. So all the traffic slowed down,” Sylvia said.
It crashed right in the center lanes of Highway 50, surrounded by slowing cars. For a few terrifying moments, it looked like disaster would strike hundreds of motorists.
Then came the miracle — not a single person on the ground was hurt.
