Media Ignored Obama’s 2009 IG Firing Scandal!

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

In response to Trump’s actions, a group representing federal inspectors general issued a scathing letter, accusing the administration of overreach and disregarding legal norms. The letter, signed by former IG Mike Ware, argued the firings violated a 2022 law requiring Congress to receive a 30-day notification with reasons for dismissals. Ware, who was among those removed, criticized the president for failing to consult legal counsel and urged adherence to the legislation.

While critics have invoked this law to condemn Trump’s decision, it is worth noting that the constitutionality of the statute has been questioned. Inspectors general are appointed by the president, confirmed by the Senate, and serve at the executive branch’s discretion—a precedent firmly established.

Trump’s detractors are quick to cry foul, but history reveals that such firings are far from unprecedented. In 2009, then-President Barack Obama removed Inspector General Gerald Walpin after Walpin uncovered misuse of millions in AmeriCorps funds. The funds had reportedly been squandered by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a prominent Obama supporter and former NBA star.

Reports at the time indicated that AmeriCorps volunteers under Johnson’s leadership had been used for personal tasks such as running errands, engaging in political activities, and even washing Johnson’s car. Despite Walpin’s findings, Obama defended his ally, citing a supposed loss of confidence in the IG. Critics argued that Obama’s actions shielded corruption among his inner circle.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley supported Walpin, stating the IG had done a “good job” identifying substantial financial misuse. Grassley’s concerns, however, were largely ignored by the mainstream media. Legal analyst Glenn Reynolds pointed out at the time, “Under a Republican President, this would be a huge scandal.”

The media’s treatment of Obama’s firing of Walpin compared to Trump’s recent actions highlights a glaring double standard. While Obama faced little scrutiny, Trump’s decision has been painted as an abuse of power. Conservative commentators like Michelle Malkin have even connected Obama’s AmeriCorps scandal to then-First Lady Michelle Obama, suggesting a deeper web of corruption.

Just Released: Trump White House Collector’s Bobblehead!

Trump’s bold move to clean house among federal IGs has reignited a fierce debate about government accountability. Is this a necessary step toward eliminating corruption, or is it a political overreach? The mainstream media’s response, contrasted with its silence during Obama’s presidency, raises further questions about impartiality and integrity.

As history shows, presidential power to dismiss Inspectors General is nothing new. However, the selective outrage surrounding such decisions continues to reveal the partisan lens through which Washington operates.
