In a tragic turn of events, the mayor of a small South Carolina town died in a car crash earlier this week while being pursued by law enforcement. The incident occurred just days after the town’s entire police department resigned amid allegations of harassment and funding disputes.
George Garner II, the 49-year-old mayor of McColl, was killed on Tuesday in a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler truck. According to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee, the crash happened on S.C. 34 in Mechanicsville at around 2:40 p.m. Garner was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe westbound before veering into the eastbound lane and colliding with the truck.

The tragic accident claimed Garner’s life after he was transported to McLeod Regional Medical Center for his injuries. The truck driver sustained injuries as well, though the extent of those injuries has not been disclosed.
