On Friday, House Republicans had been advancing a strategy involving three separate funding bills, a plan that had gained significant support after a Trump-endorsed proposal was struck down by Democrats and some Republican defectors. Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) stated that the strategy had been “approved.” However, Johnson opted for an “all-in-one” spending bill, aligning with Democratic preferences.
This move infuriated many in the GOP, especially since the final bill passed with more Democratic votes than Republican. In total, 196 Democrats supported the measure, compared to just 170 Republicans.
Johnson’s Leadership Under Fire
Rep. Cory Mills, one of the Republicans who voted against the measure, criticized Johnson’s leadership in an interview with The Gateway Pundit. “This was not what we had planned,” Mills remarked, highlighting the growing rift within the party over Johnson’s handling of the issue.
The fallout didn’t end with the bill’s passage. Prominent Republican lawmakers have since voiced their frustrations. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), for instance, filed a motion to vacate Johnson’s speakership earlier this year after he passed spending bills with Democratic support. Although the motion was tabled in a decisive 359-43 vote, it underscored the dissatisfaction brewing within the GOP ranks.
Even staunch Trump allies like Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Rep. Thomas Massie supported Greene’s motion to vacate, signaling a deeper divide in the party’s leadership.
Trump Reassessing Support
Adding to Johnson’s woes, former President Donald Trump is reportedly reconsidering his support for the embattled Speaker. Trump’s dissatisfaction stems from what he and his supporters see as a failure to stand firm on key conservative priorities. With the 2024 election cycle in full swing, Trump’s endorsement—or lack thereof—could be a game-changer for Johnson’s future.

A House Divided
As the January vote for Speaker approaches, the GOP faces an uphill battle to unify its fractured caucus. Rep. Massie’s poll is a telling indicator of the conservative base’s sentiment: a strong majority of Republican voters appear ready for a change in leadership.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic Minority Leader, has made it clear that his party won’t come to Johnson’s rescue this time. This leaves Johnson vulnerable to another motion to vacate, particularly if he fails to secure the confidence of his Republican colleagues.
The next few weeks will be pivotal in determining the fate of Mike Johnson’s speakership. For now, the poll results speak volumes: Republican voters are demanding fresh leadership, and the pressure is mounting for the GOP to deliver.
