Maher Claps Back at Butker Speech Critics: “I Don’t See The Issue!”

Bill Maher, the seasoned host of “Real Time With Bill Maher,” has ignited a discussion on the widespread reactions to Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s commencement address at Benedictine College. Maher, known for his liberal views, surprisingly came to Butker’s defense during his show on Friday, suggesting that the backlash is symptomatic of why many Americans are growing disillusioned with the left.

Despite clarifying his personal distance from Butker’s views—emphasizing his own non-religious stance and disinterest in traditional family life—Maher questioned the aggressive labeling of Butker as a villain simply for endorsing motherhood and his Catholic values. “Look, I can’t express how much this guy is not like me. He’s religious, he loves marriage, he loves kids. I couldn’t be more not like this guy,” Maher remarked. “He’s in big trouble because he said at this event, and this is conservative Catholics, and he’s now history’s greatest monster.”

In his analysis, Maher cited Butker’s actual words, which have ignited ire among some progressives: “He said uhh… some of you talking to the women here, some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world. Okay, that seems fairly modern, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world…. I don’t see what the big crime is,” Maher stated. He expressed bewilderment over the strong negative reactions, suggesting that Butker’s perspective resonates with a significant portion of Americans. “I really don’t [see the crime]. And I think this is part of the problem people have with the left, is that lots of people in this country are like this.”
