Former President Donald Trump, entrenched in a tumultuous hush money trial, faced back-to-back rejections from Judge Juan Merchan this week as he navigated the courtroom drama surrounding his previous dealings with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Trump’s legal team initiated two procedural appeals: the first was a motion for a mistrial, already denied two days earlier; the second, a modification to the gag order, allowing Trump to openly discuss Daniels’ testimony. Both requests were swiftly dismissed by the judge.

As the trial unfolded, Daniels, the prosecution’s key witness, countered the defense’s accusations of inconsistencies in her narrative about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump, a story pivotal to the allegations against him. Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, pushed for a mistrial, claiming Daniels’ detailed account of the alleged sexual interaction was not pertinent to the charges of falsifying business records and therefore harmful to the defense. “Merchan dismissed these claims, asserting the relevance of Daniels’ testimony to corroborate her story, leading him to reject the mistrial motion,” as per Axios.
In a subsequent effort to counteract public narrative, Trump’s legal team sought to loosen the gag order following Daniels’ testimony, arguing that Trump deserved a chance to address the public regarding the claims made during the trial. “He needs an opportunity to respond to the American people,” argued Blanche. The judge, however, maintained the gag order, citing the potential for continued inflammatory remarks.
