The evangelical world is mourning the loss of one of its greatest champions. Dr. James Dobson, a trusted advisor to multiple U.S. presidents and the man behind one of the most influential Christian ministries in modern history, has passed away at the age of 89. His death was confirmed Thursday morning by the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute.
Dobson wasn’t just another leader in the faith community — he was a force of nature. His lifelong mission to strengthen families and bring biblical values into America’s cultural conversations made him a giant in the Christian movement. Gary Bauer, senior vice president of public policy at the JDFI, perfectly captured what millions of believers are feeling right now. “Dr. Dobson was a pioneer — a man of deep conviction whose voice shaped the way generations view faith, family, and culture,” Bauer said. “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped equip countless families to thrive in a world of shifting values. He was a mentor, a counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times.”
From Humble Roots to Global Influence
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1936, Dobson dedicated his life to building up families and spreading the Gospel. He launched Focus on the Family in the 1970s, a ministry that quickly became one of the largest evangelical organizations in the world. By 1991, the ministry relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where it remains a powerhouse of Christian influence to this day.
