“I think it’s going to be hard in these next four years because you have an administration coming in that has had an opportunity to see how things work, what didn’t work,” Murkowski said.
“Now we’ve had four years to think about it, and the approach is going to be: everybody toe the line, everybody line up. We got you here. If you want to survive, you—you better be good. Don’t get on Santa’s naughty list here, because we will primary you.”
She expressed frustration at what she perceived as excessive loyalty demands within the party, adding, “I think we’re getting a little bit of a preview now of what it’s going to mean to be allegiant to party. I don’t think that that’s going to help us as a Republican Party, believe it or not.”
Elon Musk Enters the Political Arena
Murkowski’s concerns reflect a broader shift in the Republican Party as influential figures like Elon Musk push for greater accountability. Musk, a billionaire entrepreneur and vocal advocate for conservative values, has made waves in GOP circles with his call for a “naughty list” to track anti-Trump lawmakers.
Shortly after Trump’s election victory, Musk warned Republicans obstructing Trump’s nominees that their actions would not go unnoticed. At the time, he declared his political action committee would play a pivotal role in primary elections. In response to speculation about funding challengers to anti-Trump Republicans, Musk tweeted: “How else? There is no other way.”
Musk’s influence in politics has only grown since acquiring Twitter, now rebranded as X. Recently, he visited Capitol Hill with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to rally support for Trump’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative aimed at cutting bureaucratic waste and curbing reckless spending.
MAGA Allies Back the Push for Accountability
Musk’s “naughty list” has struck fear into establishment Republicans who have grown accustomed to ignoring their conservative base. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) highlighted the strategy, explaining Musk and Ramaswamy’s plan during a recent conversation.

“Elon and Vivek talked about having a naughty list and a nice list for members of Congress and senators and how we vote and how we’re spending the American people’s money,” Greene said, as reported by the Associated Press.
As conservative voters demand stronger alignment with the MAGA agenda, Murkowski’s apprehension reflects the larger battle within the Republican Party. With figures like Musk and Ramaswamy calling for accountability, lawmakers face increasing pressure to stand by their constituents—or risk being primaried.
