“Cancel UFC” Plan Backfires on Democrats After Trump Steps In

The image of American presidents engaging in combat sports is hardly new. History often points back to Theodore Roosevelt, a man famous for his rugged persona, who reportedly boxed opponents inside the White House until a bout ended with him sustaining a permanent injury to one eye. That legacy of physicality and spectacle is now being invoked again—this time in a very different era and under a very different president.

This summer, President Donald Trump is preparing to bring mixed martial arts to the heart of Washington, D.C., with plans to stage a UFC event on the South Lawn of the White House as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration. The event, branded as “UFC Freedom 250,” is being promoted as a patriotic showcase of sport, national pride, and public access.

But not everyone is celebrating.

A left-leaning watchdog group known as the Public Integrity Project has filed an emergency lawsuit aimed at blocking the event before it can take place on June 14. The group is asking a federal judge to halt the entire production, arguing that the planned celebration represents what it calls “deeply corrupt” use of public space and influence.
