New York Attorney General Letitia James is once again at the center of a storm — this time accused of giving safe harbor to her wanted niece at a Virginia property already under federal scrutiny.
Parole Violations and a Search Underway
Law enforcement officials in North Carolina are currently looking for Nikia Monique Thompson, the adult niece of James. Thompson is reportedly on the run after violating probation terms, and authorities suspect she has been staying at James’ Norfolk, Virginia residence — the same property tied to a questionable mortgage arrangement flagged earlier this year.
If confirmed, James could face criminal liability for knowingly housing her fugitive niece. Prosecutors could even push charges for harboring and interstate flight, a crime that carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
Federal Referral and Residency Questions
This isn’t the first time the Virginia home has landed James in hot water. Back in April, mortgage investigators referred her for prosecution after she signed paperwork declaring the Norfolk property as her “primary residence.” Critics point out that such a claim is impossible since state law requires her to live in New York while serving as Attorney General.
