New York Attorney General Letitia James is facing fresh professional heat after a conservative watchdog group formally asked the state to investigate her conduct surrounding a controversial Virginia mortgage — an issue already tied to the criminal case that a federal judge abruptly tossed out this week.
The Center to Advance Security in America, better known as CASA, delivered a detailed complaint to the Attorney Grievance Committee accusing James of behavior unbefitting the state’s top legal officer. Their allegation: she secured a mortgage under terms she allegedly wasn’t entitled to, and in doing so crossed ethical and potentially criminal lines.
According to the New York Post, CASA argues that the situation is far more serious than James and her allies want to admit. The filing claims James violated multiple pillars of New York’s professional standards for licensed attorneys. As Curtis Schube, the group’s director of research and policy, wrote in the complaint, “Fraud, misrepresentation, honesty and trustworthiness are all factors that the Rules of Professional Conduct expressly consider when weighing whether to discipline an attorney.”
