Pop icon Katy Perry is once again in the spotlight—but not for a chart-topping single or a viral fashion moment. This time, she’s making headlines for her brief journey into space, courtesy of Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. But don’t expect a hero’s welcome. The Trump administration—and much of the internet—isn’t exactly rolling out the red carpet.

Katy Perry, along with a group of high-profile women including CBS anchor Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez, the fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, boarded a Blue Origin rocket for what was hailed as a “historic” flight. The mission was promoted as the first all-female crew to reach the edge of space.

But the keyword there? “Promoted.” Because while Bezos’ team may be celebrating, others—especially in conservative circles—are calling out the absurdity of labeling this an “astronaut mission.”
And they’ve got backup.
Former Congressman and current Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy didn’t mince words in a public post, explaining that under official FAA rules, the passengers on Blue Origin’s rocket did not qualify as astronauts.
