Omar’s claims ignore a fundamental reality: USAID was created through executive order by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. That means Trump is well within his rights to dissolve or restructure it without congressional approval. But facts didn’t stop Omar from doubling down, this time taking aim at billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has been working alongside DOGE in streamlining government waste.
“Privileged billionaires who don’t give a damn about America and Americans should not be making decisions that put Americans at harm. And a billionaire that hasn’t been vetted, has not gone through confirmation, has not been elected by the American people, who we still do not understand what in the world he’s doing, should not be telling American employees that they cannot access the building they work at. What kind of country is this man turning our country into?” Omar fumed.
However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly exposed why USAID had become a prime target for reform. Speaking to reporters, Leavitt detailed how the agency had burned through its staggering $44 billion budget on radical left-wing projects with little oversight.
“Here’s the reason why Elon Musk and others have been taking a look,” Leavitt revealed before listing off shocking examples of wasteful spending, including “$1.5M to advance DEI in Serbia’s workplaces.”
That wasn’t all. According to Leavitt, USAID also threw taxpayer dollars at frivolous projects like a “$70k for a production of a DEI musical in Ireland,” a “$47k for a transgender opera in Colombia,” and an eyebrow-raising “$32k for a transgender comic book in Peru.”
It didn’t stop at reckless spending. USAID’s employees, steeped in woke ideology, had transformed their headquarters into a shrine for far-left activism. When news broke that DOGE and Musk’s team were arriving, staff scrambled to erase evidence of their ideological leanings.

“DOGE was in the building. We started — we took down our pride flags, we took down- I took out any books I felt would be incriminating. No one was talking, We heard they started taking transcripts automatically of all of our Google meets. We — they unplugged the news in the little kitchen galleys. It didn’t feel good. And then Saturday, all of the websites went down. And then I lost complete access to my computer,” a USAID employee told ABC News.
With USAID’s excessive spending and partisan agenda exposed, Trump’s decision to shut down the agency is looking more justified by the day. While Democrats like Omar cry foul, the reality is clear: USAID had become a bloated relic of government inefficiency, and it was time for real accountability. Now, Omar and her allies are left scrambling as the public sees the truth about where billions of taxpayer dollars were really going.
