President Donald Trump’s toughest immigration enforcement experiment just ran headfirst into the federal judiciary.

Four foreign nationals with violent criminal records — including homicide convictions and a child sex crime — were removed from a maximum security Louisiana facility and ordered released under supervision after a federal judge ruled their continued detention unlawful.
The ruling, issued by Judge John deGravelles, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, effectively dismantled the administration’s use of a high security wing at Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison, as a holding center for the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens awaiting deportation.
The decision is already igniting outrage inside the Department of Homeland Security and among supporters of Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Trump’s Louisiana Lockup Strategy
In September 2025, President Trump partnered with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to designate part of Angola — the state’s only maximum security prison — as a detention facility specifically for high risk criminal illegal aliens in ICE custody.
