In a stunning development out of Manhattan, a judge has thrown out the two most serious charges against the man accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson late last year.
The suspect, Luigi Mangione, made his first court appearance in months on Tuesday, facing a courtroom packed with media, prosecutors, and supporters who have closely followed the case.
Judge Gregory Carro delivered the surprise ruling, dismissing both the first-degree murder charge as a crime of terrorism and the second-degree murder charge as an act of terrorism, according to ABC News.
In his written decision, Carro explained why the charges couldn’t stand, citing a lack of proof that Mangione intended to terrorize the public at large.
