“For somebody to back a guy like Trump whose history, and discrimination, and racism goes back to housing discrimination in the ’70s,” Behar said.
She then escalated the argument even further.
“When he’s on a team that’s 55% to 60% of the NFL – of black guys,” she said, “that is just the definition of stupidity and racism.”
The most controversial moment came moments later.
“Maybe he needs a little extra padding,” Behar added.
Many viewers interpreted the comment as implying that Dart might need protection from his own teammates because of his political views and his willingness to publicly interact with Trump.
The remark immediately sparked criticism online, with many arguing that suggesting a player could face physical consequences for expressing political beliefs would be condemned if directed at almost any other public figure.
Ironically, the narrative presented on The View began falling apart as soon as it was examined against actual voting data.
Behar’s comments appeared to assume that support for Trump is universally rejected among Black Americans, particularly among Black NFL players. But election results from recent years tell a far more complicated story.
According to Pew Research data from the 2024 election cycle, support for Trump among Black men increased significantly compared to previous elections. Millions of Black Americans voted for Trump, including a substantial percentage of Black male voters.
That reality alone challenges the simplistic picture painted during the segment.
The NFL itself also reflects a broader range of political views than many media commentators are willing to acknowledge.
While professional sports leagues have often promoted progressive social causes in recent years, many athletes choose to keep their political beliefs private. Some register as independents rather than publicly identifying with either major party. Others simply avoid discussing politics altogether to escape the backlash that often follows.
The assumption that an NFL locker room would unanimously reject a teammate over a handshake with a sitting president simply does not align with the diversity of viewpoints that exist throughout the league.
Perhaps most damaging to Behar’s prediction was the response from within Dart’s own team.
Rather than fueling speculation about division inside the Giants locker room, teammate Abdul Carter reportedly dismissed any suggestion that Dart’s appearance at the rally would create conflict among players.
That response directly contradicted the fear-based scenario being promoted on national television.
Critics of The View argue that this incident follows a familiar pattern. Conservative athletes, entertainers, and public figures are often portrayed as deserving professional consequences when they express views that fall outside approved political narratives.
For years, former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow endured ridicule from members of the media simply for openly expressing his Christian faith. Now, critics say, a new generation of athletes is facing similar attacks for political reasons.
What makes this episode particularly striking is that Dart never delivered a controversial speech. He never attacked anyone. He never criticized his teammates.
He simply appeared at an event, greeted the President of the United States, and moved on.
Yet according to one of television’s most recognizable liberal commentators, that was apparently enough to warrant speculation that he might need “a little extra padding.”
Whether viewers agree with Dart’s politics or not, many are asking a simple question: If a young athlete can be publicly mocked and warned about potential consequences merely for shaking hands with a president, what does that say about the state of political tolerance in America’s media?
That question may end up generating far more attention than Dart’s brief appearance at the rally ever did.
