New findings suggest that tens of thousands of deceased individuals continued receiving government nutrition assistance benefits for years without triggering meaningful intervention from federal officials. The revelations are fueling fresh scrutiny of how taxpayer-funded programs were managed during the Biden administration and why safeguards failed to catch obvious warning signs.
According to investigators, one of the most alarming discoveries involved 38,618 deceased individuals who reportedly received nutrition assistance payments between 2017 and 2024. During much of that period, federal spending on food assistance surged to historic levels, with annual expenditures reaching approximately $128 billion.
Now, officials connected to Vice President JD Vance say they are moving aggressively to crack down on waste, fraud, and abuse that they argue was allowed to flourish unchecked.
